Dr. Shapiro
is a graduate of
Tufts University and Georgetown University School of Medicine, and I
has been
board certified by The American Board of Family Practice
since 1979. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and
a member of The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. Dr.
Shapiro has been in private practice at this location since 1981.
Dr. Shapiro received his acupuncture training from UCLA Department of Continuing Medical Education from April 1996 through April 1997. He is qualified to practice medical acupuncture in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Recently, Recently he passed the proficiency exam of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. He was one of the first 38 physicians in New Jersey and 378 physicians nationally to pass this exam. In February of 2001, he became one of the first 83 physicians in the nation to be board certified in Medical Acupuncture.
Dr. Shapiro uses only sterile disposable needles.
Acupuncture as a medical procedure has received the approval of two important government agencies. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) reclassified acupuncture needles in March of 1996 from "investigational devices" to "medical devices." The NIH (National Institutes of Health) Consensus report from 11/97 stated, for the first time, that acupuncture is an effective treatment for certain medical conditions.
