Dr. Shapiro Becomes Board Certified

In Medical Acupuncture

Dr. Dein Shapiro, a local Family Practitioner in Branchburg, is one of the first 83 physicians in the nation to become Board Certified by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture.  To achieve this distinction Dr. Shapiro first had to complete rigorous training program in Medical Acupuncture at the UCLA School of Medicine.  Second, he had to acquire substantial clinical experience using Medical Acupuncture in medical practice. And finally, he had to pass a comprehensive board examination in medical acupuncture. Dr. Shapiro was notified that he passed the examination in February of 2001.

Physicians who practice Medical Acupuncture are at the forefront of complementary and alternative medicine.  They have the challenge and responsibility for integrating acupuncture into contemporary medical practice.  In 1997, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) gave its endorsement to acupuncture stating:  "There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage studies of its physiology and clinical value."

Dr. Shapiro said that “…most patients in the West seek acupuncture for pain problems, but I use it for a wide variety of medical conditions as well.  A physician acupuncturist is uniquely qualified to evaluate a patient’s overall condition and decide if acupuncture is an appropriate addition to a treatment plan.  Acupuncture is virtually painless, and surprisingly effective and safe.  I use sterile, disposable needles only.”

Dr. Shapiro is a graduate of Tufts University and the Georgetown University School of Medicine.   He has been in private practice and a staff physician at the Hunterdon Medical Center since 1979.  He completed his training in Medical Acupuncture at the UCLA School of Medicine in 1997.  Dr. Shapiro is also board certified in Family Practice. He practices Family Medicine and Medical Acupuncture in Branchburg.
