Piezoelectric Stimulation for Back and Neck Pain:

A Randomized and Controlled Clinical Trial

Medical Acupuncture

 January 2004

Dr.Shapiro designed and conducted a controlled clinical trial of piezoelectric therapy  for back and neck pain on patients in his practice in 2001 and 2002. His paper was recently published in Medical Acupuncture which is the journal for the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA) and the Medical Acupuncture Research Foundation (MARF). In a randomized trial of 15 patients, Dr. Shapiro compared conventional medication therapy with conventional therapy plus piezoelectric stimulation of select acupuncture points. His study found that patients who received piezoelectric treatment:

        - recovered 20-25% faster

        - had 20% lower final pain scores

-and used almost 30% less narcotic and muscle relaxant medication.

This study was too small to prove statistical clinical significance. Dr. Shapiro is hoping to enroll more patients in the study by offering the study protocol to other clinical investigators.
